Let’s celebrate chemistry with BorsodChem

BorsodChem and the International Year of Chemistry 2011

To celebrate the International Year of Chemistry, BorsodChem is organising a full year of activities designed specifically for primary and secondary school children in Kazincbarcika with their active participation.

International Year of Chemistry calendar:

January - A special postcard was distributed to all the schoolchildren in the town – approximately 7,000. We also created our own Facebook page (BorsodChem – A Kémia Nemzetközi Éve 2011) to popularise the program amongst young people.

March – To get programme off to a fun start we are organising a children’s Ice Carnival with a fancy dress parade.

April – A more thoughtful aspect will be introduced by an essay competition for the upper level primary school and secondary school children with the title, ‘The importance of plastics in our everyday lives’. We will also organise a chemistry competition for this age group. Nursery school and lower primary school children can compete in a drawing and model competition.

June – On World Environment Day we will surround the Kazincbarcika site with approximately 10,000 children, hand-in-hand. Naturally, our young people will be expecting some entertainment to raise their interest in chemistry. To provide this, we will organise a Chemistry Road Show and a big event for the schools on the last day of the school year.

October – November – In honour of the International Year of Chemistry, we will place an extra focus on our traditional programme, ‘The chemical industry of the future, the future of chemical industry’. We will continue to invite schoolchildren for factory visits, giving them the chance to get an insight into the interesting world of chemistry.

Our aim is to inform as many pupils as possible about chemistry, and point them in the direction of this subject, thus helping to create the next generation of BorsodChem.
